LAUWERSMEER NAT. PARK PDF Afdrukken E-mail

The Lauwersmeer National Park lies in the north of Holland, close to the Waddensea. It is shared by the provinces of Friesland and Groningen. Personnally I like this area very much: Extended marshlands, lakes, canals and ditches, with patches of forest. Unlike another famous Dutch wetland, the Oostvaardersplassen which is situated in the centre of Holland, this area has a much more natural look.

You can stand here and look around for 360 degrees without getting distracted by electric wires, telephone poles, railroad or motorways. Early Octobermornings were characterised by mysterious misty conditions. In other words: Very exciting conditions for landscape-photography:

We had our "basecamp" at campsite De Pomp, on the south side of the area. If you walk along the forestedge you come across a little lookouthill, from where you have splendid views over the marslands.

Next morning I went to the west part of the Lauwersmeer NP, to Ezumakeeg, a famous spot to watch all sorts of birds, like waders, ducks, geese, herons and a recently breeding couple of White-tailed See Eagles. At this time of the year there were a lot of Golden Plovers, mixed with Lapwings. Because there was hardly any breeze, the flocks of plovers standing in the shallow water made nice reflections.

So we had a great time here camping in this part of the country, with exceptionally good weather at daytime and misty mornings with beautiful sunrises.
