End of December 2011 winter was very mild. Actually it wasn't winter at all; temperatures up to 10 degrees made it feel more like springtime. With Christmas we went to the island of Texel for a week. We stayed in a nice house a bit north of Den Hoorn.
Every day we went to stroll along the beaches of the Island. Specially in the south, not far away from where we stayed is the famous Mokbaai. We saw Hen Harriers each day and sometimes a Peregrine Falcon was on the hunt for sandpipers and other shorebirds. From the end of the Mokbaai there is a trail which leads to a very broad beach, called Hors.

One of the most significant shorebirds in winter at the North Sea Coast is the Sanderling.

I spent a couple of days on the beaches trying to picture these funny birds. I used a very low tripod, my lens is not even 10 cm above the sand. I got wet of course, because these birds tend to follow the tideline in their search of food. But, lying flat on my belly, acting as a seal, I could approach them quite close.

In October I made a trip with some naturephotographers of the VNF-Apeldoorn: Hennie van Heerden, Ton van Wouwe, Jelle de Jong and Ardjan van der Blonk. We flew to Banjul, in The Gambia and stayed the night at Sukuta Camp. It was during the last part of the rainy season and the humidity was very high. On the other hand: Everything was lush and green and a number of birds were in their breeding plumage, like this Red Bishop:

The Lauwersmeer National Park lies in the north of Holland, close to the Waddensea. It is shared by the provinces of Friesland and Groningen. Personnally I like this area very much: Extended marshlands, lakes, canals and ditches, with patches of forest. Unlike another famous Dutch wetland, the Oostvaardersplassen which is situated in the centre of Holland, this area has a much more natural look.

Most of August we visited the west part of Papua Barat, the so-called Bird's Head (Vogelkop). We had mainly focussed on two destinations: The Raja Ampat Islands and the area around Manokwari, the surrounding Lowland Rainforest and the famous Arfak Mountains. About our trip to this part of Indonesia you can see a photogallery on the album RECENT PICTURES.

The first week of July my Summerbreak started and I went to Poland to visit some friends. I stayed at the farmhouse of Anna and Piotr Paluszkiewiecz in the hamlet of Lubc Maly, not far from Krzyz Wielkopolski. They have a small campsite and a lovely guesthouse. Piotr knows a lot of people in this region and one day he asked me if I was interested in photographing European Bisons in the wild. Of course I was...! Somewhat north of Anna and Piotrs place there have been Bisons introduced in vast forests. One place I already knew but this time we went to the Drawsko Forest and met Maciej Tracz. He is a member of the Pommeranian Nature Society and responsible for the reintroducing of European Bisons in this part of Poland. We went with him and his little dog into the forest and found a herd of Bisons after about looking for three quarters of an hour.
